Nestled in the heart of Denmark, Wisconsin, Plumfield Living Books Library is a private lending library devoted to cultivating a love of truth, goodness, and beauty through living books. With about 10,000 carefully curated titles, we serve families, educators, and lifelong learners who are passionate about literature-rich education.
We are proud partners with Biblioguides. All our library patrons have a Biblioguides membership included in their annual fee. You can find our Partner Guide information here: Plumfield Librarian Account.
At Plumfield, books are just the beginning. Our vibrant community enjoys a variety of enrichment opportunities, including book clubs, handicrafts classes, and a creative writing workshop.
A note about the cover banner of this website: the artistic rendering of our library was done by an illustrator from the American Essence magazine when our library was featured in the Summer 2025 issue. Used with permission and gratitude.

Interlibrary Loan
Many of you have asked when interlibrary loan (ILL) will be available—and we are happy to say: right away in beta mode!
This is a brand new endeavor for us. While large public libraries have professional systems in place, we are creating our own from scratch—something we don’t believe any other private lending library has done. Because of that, we kindly ask for your patience as we work out the details and improve the process.
Here’s how it works:
1. Log in to your patron dashboard.
2. Click the Interlibrary Loan button.
3. Fill out one form for each book you wish to borrow from the Main Library.
4. We’ll be notified and will do our best to pull the book for you. If it’s checked out, you’ll be first in line when it returns.
When your book leaves our library:
- It will be checked out to you on the day it leaves the Main Library.
- When it arrives at the Shire Branch, Morgan will notify you for pickup.
- ILL checkouts are 60 days (instead of 45) to allow for travel and processing.
- You may return your book to either location.
Notes:
- If you request a book but don’t pick it up within the 60-day checkout period, your ILL privileges may be paused.
- No renewals are available for ILL books at this time.

I am uneasy about borrowing expensive books out of fear that we might damage them and need to pay to replace them.
Thank you for being respectful of our need to maintain these books for many others! Please know that I appreciate your concern. I am more than happy to alert you to the value of expensive books before you check them out if you would like. (Someday, we hope to put a special sticker on high-value books so that you can see that at a glance.) Also, please know that we try to be extremely reasonable. We know that books will be READ, and therefore they will not look pristine. Actually, that makes us really happy! One thing you can do to guard against book damage is to keep the books in your library tub when you are not using them. We are confident that together we can care for these books so that they are available for families for a long time.
